Data layers
SkyTruth Monitor includes many data layers that can be viewed on the map to provide extra information or context.
You can also upload and save your own datasets and access them from the Layers icon.
Search or browse for layers
- Click the Layers icon.
- Click Search for or browse layers. A list of available layers will appear. Type in a few letters if you know the name of the layer you want, or scroll to browse the list.
- Click the layer you want to select it. Some large datasets may take time to load.
- Once the layer is loaded, icons will give you option to make adjustments, temporarily hide the layer, and see more information about the layer dataset. (Options vary based on the dataset.)
Upload your own data layer
Upload a data layer:
- Click the Layers icon.
- Click the + sign next to Upload layer from file.
- Click Search for file on your machine.
- Select a data layer to load it in the map.
- After you add a layer, you can adjust the opacity and the color of your data. (Options vary based on the dataset.)
The following data layer file types can be uploaded to SkyTruth Monitor:
- GeoJSON
- KML (uncompress KMZ files first)
- ZIP file containing shapefile data (shp, dbf, prj, etc.) up to 50MB
- CSV file with column names in the first row and both latitude and longitude columns in decimal format
- Text files with valid GeoJSON data
Save a data layer
- After uploading your data layer, click the Save icon.
- Add a name for your layer and any information required to cite it — copyright information, link to the source, etc.
- Click Save.
Note: KML files cannot be saved in SkyTruth Monitor.
Delete a data layer
- Click the Layers icon.
- Click Search for or browse layers. A list of available layers will appear.
- Scroll to MY LAYERS.
- Click the layer to load it in the map.
- Click the delete icon to completely remove the layer from SkyTruth Monitor. (Cannot be undone.)
Load a saved data layer
- Click the Layers icon.
- Click the + sign next to Upload layer from file.
- Scroll to MY LAYERS.
- Click the layer to load it in the map.
