Ten years ago last week, BP’s Deepwater Horizon platform in the Gulf of Mexico exploded, killing 11 men and setting off the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. SkyTruth was there; not in person but remotely; using satellite imagery to track the spill from space. “It was no contest,” Christian Thomas told me when I asked him about choosing between the Peace Corps and SkyTruth. Born and raised near Shepherdstown, West Virginia, Christian first met SkyTruth President John Amos at the Shepherdstown Farmer’s Market when he was a student at West Virginia University. On October 10, 2019, SkyTruth discovered yet another likely bilge dumping incident in Southeast Asian waters. We identified the potential culprit as the Lumoso Aman, a bulk cargo carrier, through AIS (Automatic Identification System) broadcasts.
We’re all accustomed to seeing maps of the terrestrial spaces we occupy, our oceans are much more mysterious places.
