Tanker Falsifies and Disables AIS Tracking To Hide Entries Into Russian Ports While Leaving a Trail of Pollution in European Waters

The Liberian-flagged tanker NEW SUNRISE is currently broadcasting a false location in the Persian Gulf after leaving a trail of oily waste and unanswered questions regarding its activities in European waters over the past few months.

Analysis fueled by SkyTruth and Global Fishing Watch reveals that the operators of the NEW SUNRISE petrochemical tanker falsified their Automatic Identification System (AIS) position broadcast between November 14 and November 25, 2024, as well as between February 4, 2025 and the date of this publication (February 18, 2025).

A new report released yesterday at the Our Ocean Conference in Greece by SkyTruth identified 757 oil slicks covering 1.9 million hectares in the Mediterranean Sea between July 2020 – January 2024. Most of these slicks were discharged from vessels in transit. The data comes from our platform, Cerulean, the first free, digital tool that uses AI and satellite imagery to track ocean oil pollution and its potential culprits.

100 days after the MT Princess Empress sank in the Philippines, oil leaking from the tanker could still be seen from space

In the early hours of February 28, the MT Princess Empress — an oil tanker following a common shipping route in the Philippines — encountered rough seas and strong winds while en route from Limay, Bataan to Iloilo City.

The ship started to take on water and suffered engine trouble as the waves tossed it around in the waters off Oriental Mindoro. After putting out a distress call, the captain and 19 crewmembers were rescued from the sinking tanker by a nearby cargo ship. The unmanned Princess Empress continued to drift toward Balingawan Point in Naujan, where it finally submerged about 14 km (9 mi) from shore.
