This directory contains scripts and geospatial data used in, and output by, SkyTruth and Appalachian Voices analysis of surface coal mine recovery. The data contained in this directory were created with the support of a grant from the National Geographic Society. Code (Directory) - This directory contains the Earth Engine scripts used to to aggregate index and band values for last-mined or custom polygons. It also contains scripts for processing the Earth Engine output to calculate ARM values. Different versions of these codes are provided based on the attribute values infiles may possess. * 2021-03-09_sr_annualLastMinedMetrics.ipynb - Earth Engine processing of polygons * 2021-03-09_comprehensiveProcessing_withEcoregion_withLastMined.ipynb - calculates ARM values for polygons if the infile has it's EPA Level 4 Ecoregion and the year it was last mined specified. This processing also computes various "year to recovery" metrics that indicate how long it took a site to reach a benchmark defined by unmined forest * 2021-03-09_comprehensiveProcessing_withEcoregion_noLastMined.ipynb - calculates ARM values for polygons if the infile has it's EPA Level 4 Ecoregion but not the year it was last mined specified. No recovery metrics are calculated. * 2021-03-09_comprehensiveProcessing_noEcoregion_noLastMined.ipynb - ARM is a recovery metric which is calculated by comparing the raw ARM value for a site to the raw ARM value for unmined sites in the same EPA Level 4 Ecoregion. This code creates raw ARM values. 2. GeoJSON Data (Directory) * 20201030_lastMined_before_2015_gte_10px_srHarmonized_ARM_data.geojson.zip - These dataset contains all yearly band values for each polygon in addition to the yearly ARM values, EPA Level 4 Ecoregion code (US_L4CODE) for the centroid of each polygon, area (in m2 and km2), Sen Slopes and p-values for NDVI, NDMI, and NBR, and the year-to-%-recovery values. Unless otherwise noted, all data has been filtered to remove sites less than 10 pixels in size, or last mined in 2015 or after. All images used for analysis are Surface Reflectance Landsat products that have been RMA Harmonized. * 20201030_lastMined_before_2015_gte_10px_srHarmonized_ARM_data_simplified.geojson.zip - This dataset omits all yearly band values for each polygon. It retains the yearly ARM values, EPA Level 4 Ecoregion code (US_L4CODE) for the centroid of each polygon, area (in m2 and km2), Sen Slopes and p-values for NDVI, NDMI, and NBR, and the year-to-%-recovery values for each polygon. Unless otherwise noted, all data has been filtered to remove sites less than 10 pixels in size, or last mined in 2015 or after. All images used for analysis are Surface Reflectance Landsat products that have been RMA Harmonized. * 20201030_sr_rmaHarmonizedMed_epaERSite_metricProcessed_fullDataset.geojson.zip - These sites are used to define the baseline values for healthy forests for each EPA Level 4 Ecoregion. They contain all yearly band values for each polygon, as well as their respective EPA Level 4 Ecoregion codes (US_L4CODE, labelled as ECOREGION). * 2021-04-28_knownRecoverySites_clippedToMineBounds_ARM_lastMined_data.geojson.zip - Sites which have known recoveries, including FRA sites, that have been clipped to the spatial extent of the lastMinedPolygons they intersect. They contain all yearly band values for each polygon, as well as their respective EPA Level 4 Ecoregion codes (US_L4CODE, labelled as ECOREGION). * 20201130_lastMined_permitIntersection_srHarmonized_ARM_data.geojson.zip - Last mined polygons, clipped to the extent of mine permit boundaries.
