Help Us Monitor Tropical Forests Worldwide
/in Alerts, Alerts How-to /by Dan CogswellSkyTruth Alerts Adds High-Resolution Planet Images to Our Monitoring Toolbox
The Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment is providing free access to Planet’s high-resolution commercial satellite imagery for monitoring the world’s tropical forests. Imagery is now available free to the public on several platforms, including our own SkyTruth Alerts.
2020: A Challenging Year in Review
/in Alerts, Bilge Dumping, Biodiversity, Coal, Conservation Vision, Freshwater, Harmful Algal Blooms, Hydraulic Fracturing, Mountaintop Mining, Wildlife Conservation /by Ry CovingtonSkyTruth powered through the many challenges of 2020 and emerged with new skills and tools to protect the Amazon, the oceans, and more.
In early 2019 SkyTruth announced Conservation Vision, our initiative to use machine learning to automate the analysis of the ever-growing archives of satellite imagery. These days it encompasses most, if not all, of our data science team’s work. At year’s end, SkyTruth Technical Program Director shares more about these tools and their potential impacts — along with a few other exciting developments from 2020. Please consider a donation to help us continue this work in 2021.

The Latest Data on Mountaintop Mining in Central Appalachia
/in Biodiversity, Climate, Coal, Mining, Mountaintop Mining /by Christian ThomasSkyTruth data shows that area of actively mined land in the region continues to decline. But is it recovering?
As 2020 comes to a close, SkyTruth is releasing our annual update to our Central Appalachian Surface Mining dataset, providing detailed information about the extent of mining operations from 1985 through 2019. The new data shows that trends we identified last year continue: namely, new areas have been cleared for mining, yet the total amount of land in the region being mined is declining.
What’s In the Water? An Analysis of Harmful Algal Blooms Using Remote Sensing
/in Harmful Algal Blooms /by Brendan JarrellSkyTruth worked with researchers at Kent State University to detect toxic algal blooms quickly and easily from space using Google Earth Engine.
A few weeks ago, SkyTruth co-hosted a virtual meetup at Google’s Geo for Good Summit with our partners at Kent State University (KSU) to present our work identifying harmful algal blooms (HABs) using Google Earth Engine and satellite imagery. In this post, Geospatial Analyst Brendan Jarrell shares how we made detecting HABs quicker, easier, and more accessible to others.
Supporting SkyTruth
/in Bilge Dumping, Biodiversity, Climate, Coal, General, Mining, Mountaintop Mining, Protected Area Monitoring /by John AmosSkyTruth developed new techniques to monitor and protect the planet throughout 2020. Help us accomplish even more in 2021.
At SkyTruth we say that seeing is believing, and — even more importantly — if you can see it, you can change it. To help us continue illuminating the reality of environmental impacts on the ground in 2021, please consider making a year-end donation to SkyTruth.
