The pattern revealed by the radar images corresponds closely with that seen on plots generated by the U.S. Coast Guard, tracking the cumulative locations of fishing vessels using another satellite-based technique called VMS (Vessel Monitoring System). Satellite radar images provide an independent means of verification that all fishing vessels are complying with the VMS system, and could prove an important tool for identifying enforcement and management problems in fisheries around the world.
