SKYTRUTH AT WORK

In addition to our own projects, SkyTruth provides assistance to environmental advocates and government with using remote sensing and digital mapping. Here are some of the things we do:

  • Consult with project partners to determine if remote sensing can help them meet their objectives
  • Design projects that use satellite images, aerial photography, or other types of remote sensing to understand and communicate environmental issues and concerns
  • Select and acquire the appropriate imagery
  • Process the imagery to enhance features of interest, and place within a GIS-compatible mapping system
  • Combine imagery with other geographic information using GIS tools and analytical techniques
  • Produce hardcopy and softcopy maps and supporting graphics
  • Conduct training sessions on remote sensing and image processing

PROJECT EXAMPLE
Natural Gas Infrastructure in the Upper Green River Valley, Wyoming

In partnership with the Upper Green River Valley Coalition, an alliance of local and national environmental advocacy organizations, SkyTruth is using satellite images to illustrate the rapid spread of infrastructure related to natural gas drilling in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem of western Wyoming.

Scientists are using SkyTruth's images to see if the habitat fragmentation caused by this infrastructure is changing the behavior of mule deer and pronghorn antelope. This project focuses on burgeoning development in one of the hottest natural gas plays in the continental United States -- the Jonah field -- and in an adjacent gas field, the Pinedale Anticline. Click on the link above to see what we've done so far for this ongoing effort!

For more on the issues and environmental concerns related to this project, see web pages on the Upper Green River Valley by the Upper Green River Valley Coalition, The Wilderness Society and Wyoming Outdoor Council. Or read the testimony presented to Congress by SkyTruth's President, John Amos (Environmental Aspects of Modern Onshore Oil and Gas Development, September 17, 2003).
